At the end, put a towel in the bottom of the washing machine, and place all the Tupperware boxes inside. Another towel on top, tape the door closed and all is safe and secure.

Take clothing drawers out of the dressers, move the dresser into the van; replace the drawers. If there are empty drawers to be found, they can be filled later as needed. Large mirrors, pictures and whatnot, can be wrapped in comforters, and placed securely between the wall of the van, and say….a dresser? Or, it could be placed behind one of the larger appliances. Laying it flat is not recommended. Glass has a tendency to break, when large things are bounced upon it!

Coffee tables work upside down, to be filled with cardboard boxes of various sizes. Tucked in tightly and stacked properly. Do yourself a favour and label your boxes. You already have the tape, get a paper and a marker, and jot out what is generally in the box. You’ll thank yourself later. Dishes can be wrapped up in towels from the linen closet, and placed in a cardboard box. Alternately, large rubber containers are very good for this.

Small facecloths and pairs of socks can be used to fill up glasses, cups and fine china. Any electronics such as small tape players, larger vases can all be placed inside pillow cases to make them less liable to damage.

Clothing left on hangers is the easiest. First, have a lot of hangers on hand. They can be purchased at any second-hand store for almost nothing. Make sure the clothes are hung well, and buttoned. Use tape to wrap 8 – 10 coat hangers together at the top. Take a bedsheet, and wrap it around the entire bunch of hangers, tightening at the top. This can be secured either just by tying the sheet in half knots, or using clothespins to hold things together. Clothes come out ready to be hanged, no dust involved. This way the clothing can by lain almost anywhere within the van vicinity. I usually wait until I’m near the end for this bit.

Last but not least, metal pots with lids are the best for transporting cutlery, silverware, kitchen knives etc. Wrap all the ‘pointy’ bits in dish clothes or towels and place them in the metal pot. Place the lid on, and once again, your best friend the tape comes out!

The most time consuming part of a move is the packing and subsequent unpacking. I had everything from sofas to bicycles to store. As well, labeling the boxes is very important. It makes it so much easier upon arrival to the new city knowing what is inside each box. Unpacking becomes more organized. Also it is a good idea to make note of how many boxes have to be shipped if movers are involved so that everything can be accounted for when delivered.

Vehicle Readiness

Experienced long distance drivers such as truckers always have their vehicles checked before going onto the road. It’s wise to do this with the car or in whatever you plan to travel over 1000 kilometers. I took my Ford in for a tune-up, which included an oil change and then I felt more comfortable to take the journey.

The Road

Know your road map. I was able to plan the course of the journey with my Dad who was travelling back as well. We drove from the 401 East in Toronto having left early in the morning, to Ottawa and then stopped to overnight. The next day we drove from Ottawa to Quebec, to New Brunswick and then another overnight in a hotel. Finally the last leg of the trip was to drive from New Brunswick straight on to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The drive can be done non-stop in 17- 19 hours depending on your driving speed. We felt better doing this trip in two days.
